Favorite St. Augustine Quote

Oh, too late have I loved thee, beauty so ancient and so new, too late have I loved thee.
Behold, You were within me, and I was searching outside, among the beauty of Your creation. At last, didst You call out loud, did You force open my deafness and chase away my blindness. You did breathe fragrant odours, and I drew in my breath; and now I pant for You. You did touch me, and I burned for Your peace. Lord, have pity on me; my evil sorrows contend with my good joys. Lord, have pity on me. You are the Physician, I am the sick man; You are merciful, I need mercy. Is not the life of man on earth an ordeal? My whole hope is in Your exceeding great mercy and that alone. Give what You command and command what You will. O Love, O my God, enkindle me! – St. Augustine

Here are a few more because I can't resist.

What does love look like? It has the hands to help others. It has the feet to hasten to the poor and needy. It has eyes to see misery and want. It has the ears to hear the sighs and sorrows of men. That is what love looks like.

The world is a book, and those who do not travel read only a page.

Christ is not valued at all, unless he is valued above all.

You have made us for yourself, O Lord, and our hearts are restless until they rest in you.

God loves each of us as if there were only one of us.

Give me chastity and continence, but not yet.

Since love grows within you, so beauty grows. For love is the beauty of the soul.

Faith is to believe what you do not yet see; the reward for this faith is to see what you believe.

Patience is the companion of wisdom.

Pray as though everything depended on God. Work as though everything depended on you.
